Potting – sealing hollow spaces

Similar to insulation, potting is used to protect sensitive electrical components against environmental influences such as dust, temperature fluctuations, damp and fire, increasing their service life. To close off hollow spaces within sensitive components over the long term, so-called “self-levelling” (that is, very liquid) materials are used.

In potting, low-viscosity material is filled into a mould. Applied here are specifically prepared one- or two-component potting compounds (1K / 2K) made of PU, epoxy resin or silicone which differ in terms of hardness, density, reactivity, elasticity, chemical and thermal resistance, adhesion and colour.

The permanent potting and encapsulation of components is widespread in all sectors and fields of application: In consumer electronics (e.g. household devices), in armaments, electronics, automotive, lighting and medical technology. In the automotive field, seals are used in many components such as control modules, electric drives, electronics and control devices for driver assistance systems, gearbox control, motor control and much more.
