dispensing technology power electronics –

dosing technology power electronics –
where current flows, heat must come out

IGBT modules, SiC and GaN power semiconductors, frequency converters and inverters: power electronics are under continuous thermal load. Thermally conductive pastes (TIM) and potting compounds are critical to the system – they determine the operating temperature, service life and reliability of the entire unit. An uneven application of TIM or an air bubble in the potting leads to premature failure of the module. Dispensing systems from dosmatix can handle precisely these demanding materials: abrasive thermally conductive pastes, highly viscous silicones and thermally conductive epoxies – precisely, reproducibly and reliably.

why is dispensing technology crucial in power electronics?

The thermal connection of power semiconductors is the most critical factor for system reliability. Thermal Interface Materials (TIM) must be precisely dosed: Too little material creates air pockets (hotspots) and poor heat conduction; too much material leads to displacement and contamination of neighboring components. At the same time, TIM pastes are often heavily filled with ceramic particles (Al₂O₃, BN) and are therefore highly abrasive – a particular challenge that requires low-wear dispensing technology.

typical applications and materials

Precise, pulsation-free bead application of abrasive and highly filled thermal conductive pastes (Al₂O₃, BN-filled) on power semiconductors.

potting

Bubble-free vacuum potting of IGBT modules, converters and inverter systems with 2K epoxy resins. Potting of power modules for maximum reliability under continuous thermal load.

sealing

Application of FIPG seals on inverter housings with 1C RTV silicone.

bonding

Precise bead application of abrasive, Al₂O₃-filled thermal conductive pastes on power electronics.

suitable dispensing technology from dosmatix

dispenser

dos piston
Piston dispenser, 2K

The solution for precise 2K vacuum potting of IGBT modules and complete power electronics assemblies. The alternating-continuous version (M-A/L-A) is designed for series production.

dos screw
Progressive cavity dispenser, 1K/2K

Our core competence for abrasive, highly filled TIM pastes. The progressive cavity principle is extremely abrasion-resistant and protects the fillers in the material. It guarantees pulsation-free application and constant quantities, even when viscosity changes due to the influence of temperature.

frequently asked questions and answers

häufige fragen und antworten

Which system is best suited for abrasive thermal pastes?

A: That depends on the application – dosmatix offers two optimized solutions here: For precise bead applications and very small quantities, the dos screw progressive cavity dispenser is the first choice. Its functional principle enables pulsation-free, continuous application with a precisely defined bead contour – even with heavily filled, abrasive materials. The dos piston piston dispenser is recommended for larger quantities and high throughput. The piston principle with alternating operation (variant M-A / L-A) enables a continuous material flow. Another advantage: the use of a rinsing liquid allows the system to be cleaned efficiently and prepared for the next cycle – a decisive factor in series production.

Why is vacuum potting important for IGBT modules?

A: Air pockets in the potting material reduce the electrical insulation and heat dissipation. Under high voltage and thermal load, this can lead to partial discharges and premature failure. Vacuum potting with dos piston reliably prevents this.

How is a constant application quantity achieved with TIM pastes?

A: Both dosmatix systems used for TIM applications work according to the volumetric principle – the dispensing quantity is therefore reproducibly constant, regardless of fluctuations in the viscosity of the material. The dos screw dispenses a precisely defined volume per revolution and is particularly suitable for precise bead applications and very small quantities where the exact contour is crucial. The dos piston also uses the piston principle to ensure a precise, reproducible dispensing volume – and is the preferred choice for larger quantities and high throughput in series production.
